Zack Snyder is known for his visually exhilarating and at times surprisingly intellectual films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But before he became a well-known director, he started out with a big 2004 hit, an almost sacrilegious remake of the George Romero classic, Dawn of the Dead
Director Zack Snyder had a lot of promise, given his Dawn of the Dead remake. Horror fans were eager to learn what he was cooking up next. And now, more than 17 years later (and after being briefly trapped in the gravitational pull of superhero cinema), Snyder is releasing Netflix’s Army of the Dead, only to prove how it looks like there will be no further surprises after his unique zombie plot has been laid bare!
Army of the Dead is a film that holds real promise as an action-horror movie but which somehow doesn’t quite attain what it seems to aspire to be. Ultimately, in spite of the fun it has at its own expense, Army of the Dead never lets down its guard and so
while we’re able to share in the dark comedy from time to time – or even giggle out loud at some of the dismemberments – there’s just never a deep dig into the black comedy that was likely intended with this one. There are certainly good moments here and there for sure but despite their intentions
, Army of the Dead never manages to fully immerse us in either its horror or action elements. So after all of this said and done, perhaps it would’ve been better if director J.T. Petty had given his army more breathing room…
